Watching the Red Foxes

Last Friday I saw a red fox in the yard; it looked back as if waiting for his mate. My neighbor told me she has been watching them in the mornings & had seen then just before we got home around 10:00 am today. She’s seen 4 little kits with them. Not sure where their den is but guessing it’s real close, maybe just below the grandkid’s trail.

We need to move the cars back so not to block our view of the foxes & then bring out 2 lawn chairs so we can watch for them later this evening. Sadly we don’t have windows on that side of the house.

Update May 19: I’ve enjoyed seeing the foxes again, but wonder if they are a danger to the cats. The foxes might help with our mouse problem. (posting by Cindy on Facebook)

Kansas Autumn Days

Beautiful FALL weather this morning! I love this time of year, with crisp mornings, jacket weather, camping, tossing another log on the fire, roasting hot dogs on a stick.
We have a burn pile that needs to be torched, but have been waiting to do so after a big rain so we don’t burn down the countryside. (from Cindy’s Facebook page)

Admiring the Blue Heron

A Blue Heron was in our pond this morning looking for his breakfast. I find them so interesting to watch. They have keen eye sight so rarely can we get close enough to watch them let alone get a picture. Viewing him through the window is the best I can get.

Watch for Ticks

Just a reminder that ticks are out in plenty this time of year. Found 2 on me already this month. So if out working in the yard or garden or the kids just playing outside check for ticks every night. You don’t have to live out in the woods like we do to have ticks, because we had them when we lived in town.

Life Is a Hoot…

Life is a hoot when you have an owl at your door.

Saw the blue heron tonight and on Tuesday a turkey flew over my head. I was afraid he wouldn’t get enough lift.

Raccoons have set up residence in the metal shed next to our camper.

Wooden Cowboy

I’ve been working on repairing/ restoring a wood-craved figure that is about 3 ½ feet tall made from a tree trunk. He was headed for the burn pile if I hadn’t rescued him at a garage sale last week. Filled his cracks w/ caulking and sawed off the broken cowboy hat that couldn’t be repaired. I have a red woven cowboy hat to replace it with. Today I added a new coat of paint to his yellow trench coat, red western shirt & blue jeans. Also adding a toy metal sheriff’s star. Then I’ll spray on a protective clear coat to help him last a couple years longer.

When finished I’m taking TEX to our camp/golfing place, they’re having a Western Day’s Bar-B-Q this weekend plus extra fun with a Guy & his Trick Horse. Thought TEX will look cute by the front gate.

After that I may move him around like one of the Gnomes with the red pointed hat. One day he may be standing on the bench at the 9th hole, the swimming beach, fishing or over at the horse barn. After all of that if he hasn’t gotten lost I’ll take him back to our lot for a long rest……

Swamp Mutt

My pond swiming dog now smells like a swamp mutt! I’m surprised a peek-a-poo loves the water as much as he does.
Larry & I are working on a flower bed & garden in the back yard. Hard labor but feels good to be working w/ our hands. Planted 8 tomatoe plants in large patio pots.

April is National Poetry Month. A few of my poems are posted on the Our Echo site. Just look for Cynthia Ross there. Here’s a tribute poem that I wrote about a steamship that sank in the Mississippi River. It’s called “Steamship Arabia.”

Some other poems that I have there are Haiku Buffalo, Wichita – Mighty Big City and one called Monarch Butterfly.

Thumping on the Roof

What is that mysterious noise on the roof? I hope it isn’t a raccoon. My other thought was mountain lion, but they aren’t common in Kansas. Not too long ago, one was killed by a rancher in Western Kansas.

I sure hope it isn’t a mountain lion. The dog didn’t bark and surely he would if a mountain lion was prowling around on the roof of our log home.
